Dricus du Plessis has made history. But for the acclaimed fighter, his success is attributed to other fighters. A nation of them in fact. A viral clip of Dricus unpacking his ‘Hulle Weet Nie Wat Ons Weet Nie’ has resurfaced and given South Africans more than just all the feels, but our spark:

South Africa (24 January 2024) — Dricus du Plessis has been the name on everyone’s lips recently, for all the best reasons. From the most avid UFC watchers to South Africans who simply know that this man made history, Dricus came, saw, conquered and left South Africa feeling enormously proud.

Naturally, there’s been a lot of focus on the man who recently became the first-ever South African Middleweight champion in the UFC’s history. One snippet of Dricus praising our country’s ability to rise against adversity has particularly caught the internet’s attention, and it is a much watch for any South African who needs to reignite a little pride and their local spark.

The snippet starts with Dricus talking about what has become his famous catchphrase, ‘Hulle Weet Nie Wat Ons Weet Nie’. But how the champion fighter unpacks the meaning behind it is what has warmed local hearts:

In the champ’s words:

“It’s a statement more than something to be questioned. It’s a statement that even though [South Africa are] underdogs, even though we do not have what all these big countries have…we don’t have the facilities an American gym has, we don’t have the second, third and forth generation of coaching that they have, but we have our coach. The best coach in the world…

“We have all these challenges, we have load shedding…you don’t have the government’s financial backing like all these other countries do…but we are South African. And people don’t know. That’s what they don’t know. They don’t know what we are willing to do to win, and how far we are willing to go to be the best.”

He adds:

“We are built different. No matter how tough it goes… we are faced with hardships everyday, much more than anybody else. But no, we love our country. We love our people.”

“This country is the major part of my success.”—Dricus du Plessis.
