Brave Treverton College swimmers took on the challenge of the Oceans 8 Charity Swim, raising funds for 14 deserving causes.

Durban, South Africa (08 August 2024) – The Oceans 8 Charity Swim made a splash in Durban recently.

This thrilling warm-water ocean swim event raised funds for conservation and education initiatives. To participate, swimmers were required to fundraise for a chosen charity before taking the plunge.

Swimmers could choose from three distances: an eight-mile challenge, a four-mile swim, or a one-mile option. To participate, entrants were required to raise a minimum of R6,000, R4,000, or R1,000, respectively, but were encouraged to fundraise beyond these amounts.

Six Treverton participants, including four students and two staff members, conquered the Oceans 8 Charity Swim this year.

Oceans 8 Charity Swim was created by a group of non-profit organisations to help provide charities that have a footprint in KwaZulu-Natal with a sustainable source of income.

Fourteen charities are supported by this swim. These included:

  • The Duzi-Umngeni Conservation Trust (DUCT),
  • National Sea and Rescue Institute (NSRI),
  • Project Rhino,
  • Singakwenza Early Childhood Development Education Centre,
  • Adopt A River Eco Solutions,
  • Caversham Education Institute,
  • Centre for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife (CROW),
  • Game Rangers Association of Africa,
  • Sailors’ Society of Southern Africa,
  • Kerr House,
  • Liberty NPO,
  • One Planet S.A.,
  • Umduduzi Hospice Care for Children
  • and Wildlife ACT.

Special congratulations to Ruby Sproat for completing an impressive eight-mile swim, Isabella Heinecken for swimming four miles, and Any Hughes and Clémence Berthome for each tackling a one-mile challenge.

A special mention went to Clémence Berthome, who was on exchange from France, for braving the South African waters, raising funds for South African charities, and enjoying it!
