Jonathan Maehler is set to tackle the Comrades Marathon for the first time with a winged-cause at the finish line. No mere mighty race, his efforts will go to an everyday angel who took children under her wing after their Gogo passed away.
Durban, South Africa (5 June 2023)—The 96th Comrades Marathon is set to take place this week, with different goals amassed behind the finish line. For Comrades rookie Jonothan Maehler, his first time tackling the ultramarathon is laced with good intentions. Maehler has dedicated his big run to the winged women of the Angel Network who have a simple pledge: help whoever needs it.
The non-profit connects unsung angels who work together on multiple campaigns and projects. These range from feeding schemes (they’ve fed millions in South Africa) to skills development and relief overseas, including the people of Ukraine.
Sorry Charlie, we know who our favourite angels are.
Maehler shares that he hopes to complete the 88km sweat-a-thon in 10 hours and that all funds will go directly to the Angel Network in Durban.
According to the angels, one of the projects Maehler’s run will help race into action, is the rebuilding of the ‘Precious Veggie Shop’.
The shop, based in Molweni was taken out by the KZN floods and was the lifeline for its owner referred to as Precious, and her family. Despite the massive setback, Precious still continues to wear her wings.
“Precious has recently taken in two young children after their Gogo died in the floods. No matter how little Precious has, her heart and kindness never ends.”—The Angel Network Durban.
The goal is to rebuild, restock and remind good people that angels wear running shoes sometimes.
