Blood Shortage

Over the weekend, many Joburgers were busy saving lives. Thanks to their efforts, over 38,000ml of blood was collected amid a blood shortage in SA.

Johannesburg, South Africa (25 August 2023) — Most of us won’t find ourselves in situations where we can save someone from a fire or rescue an animal from traffic. But, that hardly means we don’t have the opportunity to save lives—which is exactly what many Joburgers got up to over the weekend amid a national blood shortage.

The WeLoveU Foundation hosted the 613th worldwide blood drive over the past Sunday at Greenstone Shopping Centre, where heroes without capes both volunteered to collect and donate blood.

All in all, 38,400ml of blood was collected!

Considering that one person donating blood can save 3 lives, these efforts are nothing short of heroic.

Maliviwe Diko, a member of the WeLoveU foundation that’s focused on uplifting areas in need through a philosophy of love shared:

“The Int. WeLoveU Foundation carries out unconditional love to save lives in over 60 countries. Today too, we came here to carry out this act of love.”

Relebohile Matsimbi, Donor Relations Practitioner also commended the group for taking time out to donate blood to save lives.

“Thank you for taking your time out on a Sunday to be with us and donate blood to save lives. You could have been doing other things or been with your families, but you chose to come here and donate blood. You might take it lightly that you’re just donating, but you donating blood saves at least three lives. You’re giving another opportunity to someone else to fulfill their dreams in life”, she said.

Despite these efforts, blood stocks across SA are very low. To be an everyday hero and lend an arm, visit the South African National Blood Service.
