Cakey by Davy’s Davy Tsopo has been blown away by his community’s support after the egg shortage left him scrambling for key cake ingredients.
Linden, South Africa (06 October 2023) – Cakey by Davy is being featured again today, for another amazingly feel-good reason! Davy Tsopo’s local community have been donating eggs to the small-scale baker so he can keep his business running through the egg shortage.
Davy was first featured on Good Things Guy in 2020 when he lost his job due to the pandemic and started watching baking videos on YouTube to make ends meet. Megan Toni Hunter, a talented writer and activist for rare diseases in South Africa came across his beautiful story, she learned he was a cleaner at a well-known restaurant who had lost his job due to the lockdown.
Davy was left with nothing and needed to support his wife and children. Distressed, he turned to YouTube and found comfort in watching baking videos. He became inspired to start baking. He thought that if he baked a few things, he could make some money to help keep them afloat.
What Davy didn’t realise was that he had stumbled into his passion by pure accident. His love of baking has not only rejuvenated his spirit but it has given him a real way to support his family. By 2021, his little business had grown immensely and he was even named a Meta Changemaker for using social media to grow a business.
His bakes have become a beloved addition to many parties and Cakey by Davy is today a thriving business. That is until Avian flu broke out in South Africa leading to egg shortage throughout the country.
If you have ever baked a cake, you will know an essential ingredient is eggs. So how does a baker who needs eggs to make his cakes and fill his orders when there is limited to no stock of a key ingredient? Well, it turns out the kindness of others is here to save the day!
Davy took to his Instagram page to thank his supporters for the donations of eggs he had received in order to keep baking up his celebration cakes.
“I always say that I’m surrounded by lovely people. Due to bird flu there’s shortage of eggs in the country. Shops are allowing 1 tray per customer if they have. I just want to say thank you everyone who’s donating eggs during this tough times. It means a lot to and my business.” – Davy Tsopo
This is yet another example of South African Ubuntu in action. Davy is now able to keep up with his orders and spread joy through the art of cake.
