South African theatre legend John Kani has been awarded the prestigious Order of the British Empire for his exceptional contributions to drama and social justice.

 

Global (06 August 2024) – In a moment of immense pride for South Africa, the legendary John Kani has been awarded the Order of the British Empire (OBE). This esteemed accolade recognises his exceptional contributions to the arts, theatre, and social justice, highlighting his influence on a global scale.

Kani, an iconic figure in South African theatre and film, has been a transformative force for decades. From his groundbreaking performances in “Sizwe Banzi is Dead” and “The Island,” co-created with Athol Fugard and Winston Ntshona, to his powerful portrayal of T’Chaka in Marvel’s “Black Panther,” and mysterious Colonel Ulenga in the popular Netflix Muder Mystery series, Kani’s talent and dedication have left an indelible mark.
