Khulani Children’s Shelter equips young lives with life skills, empowering them to overcome their hardships and reach for brighter futures.

Durban, South Africa (06 August 2024) – Khulani Children’s Shelter is a haven dedicated to the holistic care of vulnerable children in KwaZulu-Natal.

Established as a non-profit organisation in 2003, the shelter provides a safe and nurturing environment for orphans, abused, and abandoned children. Focusing on physical, mental, social, and spiritual well-being, Khulani empowers young people with life skills to build brighter futures.

The Khulani Shelter has long been a beacon of hope for KZN youth and recently acquired the Fundani Children’s Home in Park Hill, Durban North, as a generous donation.

Speaking to The Good Things Guy, Prudence Mwandla, Director and Founder of Khulani Children’s Shelter, said the donation was a welcome blessing and responded to her concern about having girl and boy teens share a shelter with limited space together.

She said the new home would be very helpful in responding to the great need of vulnerable children who come from unfortunate backgrounds and require a safe space to call home.

Prudence got into the work of helping children in need after losing her husband a few years back.

“It broke my heart to see young children roaming the streets or Durban Station with no direction or guidance. Founding and working at Khulani Children’s Shelter gave me a purpose and also helped me deal with my own personal stresses at the time.

“A lot goes into caring for and raising a child. It is not easy work, not everyone can do it, but it is very rewarding,” said Prudence, who stressed how important public donations are in running the organisation and caring for the many children at Khulani.

Prudence is now 73 years old, and she wishes nothing but prosperity to young people, especially to
those children who have no one to take care of them.

She also mentioned that the organisation still needs to raise R55,000 to install running water and electricity in one of its other newer shelters, which will house 20 boys, and appealed to the general public for assistance with their plight.

The NPO also offers musical lessons to children in the Durban North community.
