After four years of medical school, Nomfihlakalo’s dreams were almost dashed when her student financing support got capped. But South Africa’s kindness prevailed, setting her back on track to becoming a doctor!
Cape Town, South Africa (19 January 2025) — 21-year-old Nomfihlakalo can breathe a big sigh of relief thanks to South Africa’s kindness. After facing a terrible setback in her medical studies at the University of Cape Town, the doctor-to-be is now back on track toward her dream of becoming a doctor.
As the student explains, her studies are funded through the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS). However, a newly introduced cap on funding meant that she sat with a debt of R64,912. In addition to this heavy load, the debt meant that she could not register for her final years of study.
Nomfihlakalo lost both her parents and had only her aunt to support her. However, the financial cost couldn’t be covered by her aunt, which meant the student had to lean on the kindness of strangers in hopes that they might be able to help.
For Nomfihlakalo, helping others by being a doctor has long been the plan and one she’s been determined to bring to fruition.
“It has been a childhood dream of mine and I have remained resilient and determined to achieve it,” she said, before graciously asking people to help her get back on track through a BackaBuddy campaign.
In wonderful news for herself and humanity, really, her campaign has surpassed its initial goal (R64,912 to cover the debt) and has accumulated to an incredible R104,112!
The messages many left along with their donations were inspiring and touching, and some painted with a little humour, “No Januworry formed against us shall prosper,” as one donor wrote.
Indeed, it most certainly won’t.
