There were happy tears and standing ovations as Rosie, a true Kingswood College treasure, finally hung up her apron to enjoy a well-deserved retirement, leaving behind a legacy of warmth and quiet dedication.
Grahamstown, South Africa (24 October 2025) – You know the friendly school bus driver, the compassionate cleaner, or the maintenance man – always ready to lend a helping hand? The ones who work quietly day in and day out, naturally becoming an essential part of your everyday life?
Mam Rosie Lungile was one of those treasured souls at Kingswood College. For 39 years, as a member of the catering staff, she served at the school’s kitchen, preparing hearty and nutritious meals for learners and staff.
This week, the school joined in celebrating Rosie as she embarks on her well-deserved retirement after nearly four decades of service, having been at Kingswood College longer than any pupil has been alive and longer than many staff members.
“She has seen 8 different College Heads in her time at Kingswood and prepared thousands of meals for generations of Kingswood pupils. Today she got to enjoy a delicious treat with our pupils as we honoured her,” Kingswood College shared.
A heartwarming video posted on social media shows the learners and staff sharing the sweetest messages expressing their appreciation and love for Rosie, while some admitted that they would miss her dearly as she puts down her apron.
There was also a special assembly held in her honour where Rosie was wished well on her retirement and presented with a certificate, a specially made cake, gifts and received a standing ovation from the entire school community, celebrating her tireless dedication and warmth.
“Mum Rosie, we wish you everything of the best for a very well-deserved retirement. Thank you for everything you have done for Kingswood College and the love you have shared with our children,” Kingswood said.
Her role and impact are evident in the outpouring of appreciation from all who had the pleasure of knowing her. Rosie, we wish you all the best and a wonderful retirement!
