Every day, Qhawe and his mother walked long stretches, navigating a rural KZN landscape to ensure he could attend creche. But when he struggled to stay awake in class, his principal reached out for help that would greatly change this little boy’s life.
Hillcrest, South Africa (03 April 2025) – Last week, our hearts were touched by a story of a young boy who had to walk two hours to and from school every day as his mother couldn’t afford transport costs.
This week, we’re just as moved by a very similar testimony of a little boy whose mother walked and carried him on her back every day on long walks just to get to creche.
Often arriving at school feeling very tired and barely able to stay awake throughout the day, Qhawe soon had his principal, Nontobeko Gwamanda of Siyadumisa Day Care, concerned about his wellbeing. She soon paid a visit to his home, which proved to be a lengthy distance that manoeuvred through a rural village within the Valley of 1000 Hills. She was surprised at how far the little boy had to walk just to get to school.
Nontobeko soon reached out to Project Hope SA to share Qhawe’s everyday struggles, setting in motion a wave of relief to the destitute family.
Qhawe not only received assistance with transport to get to and from school, but a bursary as well, bringing joy to his mother who now also helps out at the school’s garden and receives vegetables to take back home.
With the understanding that 90% of brain development occurs in the early years and that preschool lays the foundation for a brighter future, the Project Hope Children’s Sponsorship Programme has given young Qhawe a better chance to flourish.
Now, this little guy’s tiny feet have found much-needed relief, and his life has been forever changed!
