The 60-year-old mom was finally reunited with her son… 41 years later!
South Africa (27 February 2023) – A South African mom shared a heartwarming story about how she was finally reunited with her son after searching for him for 41 years.
Vanessa Raphaely, the founder of the popular South African Facebook group “The Village“, shared the post written by a Capetonian mother.
“The Village is South Africa’s most supportive, non-judgmental and harmonious online community of parents of tweens, teens and young adults.”
The post has garnered almost 3,000 likes in less than 24 hours and racked up hundreds of comments.
“I want to share something truly miraculous. It’s hard to share but bear with me.
Forty-one years ago, as a 19-year-old “unmarried mother”, I gave birth to the most beautiful baby boy. At this time, it was the most shameful thing that could happen to anyone. I was sent away to a home for unmarried mothers in Cape Town.”
The mother says it was a closed adoption, so no information was shared. She was allowed to write her baby boy a letter that he would be given at an age of understanding. The mother requested a copy of this letter and photos of her baby at the time but sadly was not given either.
“This was the early 80s; there was no counselling either before or after the adoption. I found myself a support group some months after the adoption that helped me deal with the trauma.”
The mother kept her details updated at the adoption attorneys for many years, hoping that “one day” her son would contact her. Fast forward 41 years and a cousin randomly had a DNA test done to help complete their family tree and posted it on the Ancestry DNA website.
Within days she received a match with someone who was 100% her family but not connected. This person – her son – contacted the cousin with his plea to help find his birth mother.
“ME! She contacted me and asked if I wanted to share my contact details with him. My reply was YES YES YES YES!!!”

“We have made contact. Extremely emotional contact. All the articles and books I had read about this topic still didn’t prepare me for this moment. What a beautiful reunion it has been. My heart is now whole again.”
The mom says that her love for him has never faltered.
“My life is now complete.”
