Nal’bali is empowering South Africans with the gift of literacy! Their employee volunteer programmes have greatly improved many lives across the country by upskilling them in early literacy education and boosting the reading abilities of numerous young children, too!

South Africa (30 January 2025) – Ordinary South Africans have had their lives change for the better through the power of literacy through Nal’bali’s collaboration with partners like the Social Employment Fund (SEF).

In Maphephetheni, KwaZulu-Natal, Bhekumuzi Gxabashe, inspired by a Nal’bali representative, became a SEF literacy facilitator. He actively recruited fellow community members, including Nokuthula Gumede, to join the programme. These facilitators dedicate their time to reading and sharing stories with children in their mother tongue.

Similarly, in Ga-Molepo, Limpopo, Bonolo Makofane, and David Mokoena lead engaging after-school reading clubs. From 2 to 3 pm, children participate in fun games, reading activities, and play-based learning, fostering a love for books.

Across the country, passionate volunteers are making a profound impact.

And the results? They speak for themselves in the form of children eagerly rushing to the Nal’ibali reading clubs after school. They’re often found with their noses buried in books or their eyes wide with wonder as they discover the amazing adventures that fictional characters embark on with each turn of the page.

“We saw some changes among the parents. They were happy about the Nal’ibal programme as they saw improvement in their children. Parents claim their children enjoy reading and carry books everywhere,” shares SEF Team Leader, Nonceba Makaula from the Eastern Cape.

Primary School learner Yamekela Cholo from Luvundu in the Eastern Cape shared that she faced difficulties reading before joining a Nal’bali reading club.

“My reading improved. That helped me a lot,” she said.

Another young learner, Thandolwethu Gwala from KZN, said she has gained more confidence through her participation in the programme.

These inspiring stories demonstrate the invaluable contributions of Nal’bali and its dedicated volunteers in empowering South African children.
