balloons

With her 5th birthday around the corner, Jenny will not be having any birthday balloons at her party because she wants to save the turtles, penguins and even the horses.

Soon to be 5-year-old Jenny shared a sweet video telling me how she has given up straws and balloons to save the turtles, penguins and yes, even the horses. While writing an update about the Owl Rescue Centre’s plastic recycling project, I stumbled on Jenny’s linked project.

Curious I took a look at what she was up to and became inspired by her dedication to make a difference for all the owls, turtles and more. Chatting to Kath, Jenny’s mom, we learned that this all started after a visit to the Aquarium. There was a poster in the foyer urging people to recycle their plastic and stop using single use items like straws and balloons. It explained how these items were harming the oceans and all the creatures within it.

Specifically Bob the turtle, who was rescued by the Aquarium because he was so ill from all the plastic in his body.

Jenny decided this was the cause for her. She got her mom to help her and together, they have started recycling loads of plastic. They have also stopped using straws and Jenny made it clear that she would not be having balloons at her upcoming party.

“We heard about Owl Rescue using plastic to make nesting boxes, so it made sense that collecting plastic would also help the turtles and penguins. Jenny has really taken to it and loves helping to load the truck when it comes. So far she’s collected over 22 cubic metres of plastic since March. Each cubic metre makes 1 nesting box.”

Jenny shared her story with us in her very own words and it is so great to see children like her work to make a difference.
