Wayde van Niekerk, South Africa’s golden Olympic champion was voted “best male athlete” by the Association of National Olympic Committee.
The Association of National Olympic Committee’s awards were held in Doha on Tuesday night where South African gold medalist Wayde van Niekerk was named male athlete of the Olympic Games.
Van Niekerk, was also the flag bearer for South Africa at the Olympic Games’ opening ceremony, has continued to raise our flag high!
He won gold in a record breaking time of 43.03 seconds in the 400 metre race, breaking Michael Johnson’s 17-year-old mark of 43.18, and is the only man to ever win the race from the outside lane.
Some news outlets called it “the most phenomenal performances ever seen on an athletics track”!
And we couldn’t agree that he deserves it more! Van Niekerk may have won the hearts of the nation at the Olympics but he was already doing phenomenal things before the games… like donating over half a million rand in winnings towards the upgrade of the Groote Schuur Hospital’s neonatal unit.
