The community of Factreton in Cape Town held a peaceful protest to draw attention to the spike in crime and one pensioner thanked them by handing out fruit.
The community of Factreton in the Cape Flats held a peaceful protest this morning. They were protesting to get more visible policing so that gangs and criminals could be caught in action. We first heard about the story on Facebook and reached out to Tifney Arends who gave us the inside scoop about the protest.
“We are riddled with crime and gang warfare. Many innocent lives were lost throughout the years but there has been a spike of innocent lives being injured and lost in recent days. Our story is no different to many other Cape Flats communities. However, we do not receive any media coverage which makes us fall off the radar of people who are in positions to assist us.
All that we want and deserve is more visible and active policing. In addition to what makes us different is our decision to have a PEACEFUL protest. No fires, looting, shooting or stone throwing. My goodness there weren’t even swear words uttered. I hope our pleas are heard before more innocent lives are lost.”
What caught our attention about the protest, was the kindness being displayed by local vendors. A pensioner took his stocks and started handing fruit to all the protesters as a way of thanking them for standing up for the community.
“The men are locals from Factreton who came and supported. We don’t have much, we are on the wrong side of the fence but we are Good People. Very Good People. Who today showed the spirit of Ubuntu.”
“The guy who asissted has his own fruit and veg stand in the area. A pensioner, but he came with several boxes and handed out free fruit. His name is Leonard Daniels.”
Leonard Daniels went out of his way to make sure his community was thought of. His actions have inspired many! South Africa has many people just like Mr Daniels.
