30 years. 335 cakes. 1 incredible heart. Most people ask for gifts on their milestone birthdays, but Phunyezwa decided to give them instead.
Missionvale, South Africa (24 February 2026) – We love birthdays and even more so when they come with a generous dose of love and kindness! Last Thursday, Phunyezwa Buru Mahlongwane chose to celebrate her 30th in the sweetest way.
Phunyezwa shared kindness with the very community she calls home by baking 335 mini cakes for the less fortunate elderly who queue for bread and soup every weekday at the Missionvale Care Centre (MCC).
Missionvale is a township on the outskirts of Nelson Mandela Bay, grappling with the harsh realities of poverty. The Missionvale Care Centre is a non-profit organisation that operates in the midst of this, embracing developmental and transformative tactics in its programmes and activities to unlock the goldmine of potential within this community!

Phunyezwa’s birthday baking was done in collaboration with the MCC’s culinary class, which equips young people with practical cooking and baking skills to help build pathways to employment and self-sufficiency.
“Moments like these remind us that community care can come from within; they show the power of stepping forward, sharing what you have and being part of building the community we all want to live in,” the thankful MMC team shared.
Phunyezwa chose to start her new decade by honouring those who have walked the path before her. Her act of kindness certainly had an impact, also earning a shout-out from the Masinyusane Development Organisation team, who expressed their pride.
We join the organisation in celebrating a woman who spent her 30th birthday in the heart of Missionvale, turning flour, sugar, and a whole lot of love into a message of dignity and remembrance for our elders.
