Massimo’s Pizzeria in Hout Bay was able to support staff during the level 4 lockdown thanks to a generous tip left by a loyal customer.
Hout Bay, South Africa (06 August 2021) – Massimo’s – a pizzeria in the Western Cape – is a fan favourite and many Capetonians travel from far to visit the restaurant in Hout Bay. Why? Because not only do they have the “best pizza in Africa”, they have even better hearts!
Whenever there is a need, Massimo and his team come up with a way to give back, but this time, a community member decided to give back to the pizzeria team!
When news came that South Africa was heading back into a Level 4 lockdown, many restaurant staff scrambled as they found themselves without work again.
Desperate to retain some of his staff, Massimo turned his kitchen into a soup kitchen for the community. He reached out to customers and fans, asking for donations to use to cook meals. This would mean the kitchen staff and some of the front of house staff could stay on to cook and distribute food to people in need.
What Massimo didn’t expect was a customer coming in and contributing R20,000 for all the staff. The money was split between everyone and helped cover them for the duration of the level 4 lockdown. The generous donor selected to remain anonymous, but their donation kept the pizzeria staff financially secure.
Many generous South Africans have been leaving tips to help waiters during this time. We love how people have united to protect each other from further economic strain.
