Special Olympics South Africa is once again hosting its celebrity Polar Plunge to raise funds for upcoming events; this time it’s the Winter Games.

Fourways, South Africa (24 August 2023) – The highly anticipated annual Special Olympics South Africa Polar Plunge is back for its 7th consecutive year, promising an exhilarating and impactful event to raise funds for the upcoming 2024 Special Olympics South Africa National Winter Games.

Following the tremendous success of last year’s plunge, which saw over 150 celebrities and well-known personalities take the icy plunge to support Special Olympics South Africa, this year’s event is set to be even more exciting.

“The Polar Plunge has a special place in my heart,” says SOSA ambassador, Sbu Shongwe. “I’ve been a host two years in a row and looking forward to being there again this year to help raise funds for our athletes. It’s truly an honour for me to be part of SOSA.”

Lula Odiba, another esteemed SOSA ambassador, adds to the enthusiasm for the upcoming event:

“Another year, another plunge!!! This has easily become my most favourite time of the year. Thank you to those who continuously support our medal winning athletes and cheering them on from the sidelines. Can’t wait to see you all in September.”

The Polar Plunge has become a signature event on our calendar, uniting communities, corporates, and other supporters of Special Olympics South Africa to come together for our athletes. Held at Altitude Beach, the 2023 Polar Plunge invites celebrities, corporates, and other supporters to bravely brave the chilly waters once again and be part of this exceptional fundraising event.

As SA celebrates the success of these incredible athletes, we take immense pride in acknowledging the outstanding achievements of the 2023 Special Olympics South Africa National Team at the World Summer Games in Berlin. The athletes garnered an incredible medal tally of 49 medals, including 22 Gold, 20 Silver, and 7 Bronze medals. This remarkable feat positioned them among the top contenders and solidified their status as true champions in South Africa.

By supporting the Polar Plunge in aid of the 2024 National Winter Games, SA not only endorses the spirit of inclusivity and empowerment for individuals with intellectual disabilities but also fosters a stronger sense of unity within our communities.

The success of the Polar Plunge hinges on the generosity and support of the South African community. By sponsoring a plunger or making a donation, individuals and businesses across the country can actively contribute to making a meaningful difference in the lives of our athletes.

“We call upon all South Africans to unite and support this exceptional event. Together, we can continue to break barriers, create a more inclusive society, and empower our athletes to achieve greatness both on and off the sporting field.”

How Can You Get Involved?

The public can participate by donating towards their favourite celebrity plunger, with any amount warmly welcomed and highly appreciated. For corporates seeking meaningful employee engagement opportunities, sponsoring and witnessing their CEOs take the plunge is a rewarding way to show support.

Join SOSA as they plunge into icy waters, driven by the cause of inclusion and empowerment. Together, we can make the 7th Annual Special Olympics South Africa Polar Plunge the most impactful yet. Your support is vital in making a lasting difference in the lives of our athletes and fostering a brighter future for all.
