In a heartwarming display of community spirit and dedication, members of the Belmont South African Police Service (SAPS) went above and beyond the call of duty to transform the life of an eight-year-old girl who had never been to school.
Kimberly, South Africa (13 February 2025) – On a small farm near Belmont, a courageous little girl lived with her grandparents, dreaming of a brighter future. When our local heroes in blue discovered that she had never stepped foot in a classroom by the age of eight, they rallied together to make a difference in her life.
The South African Police Service (SAPS) officers from Belmont Police Station went the extra mile to assist the child in obtaining her birth certificate, a new home, and enrolment in a school for the first time.
Warrant Officer Glenda Qashu, Sergeant Lawrence Mogorane and Constable Larato Makapela from the Belmont Visible Policing and Social Crime Prevention units met the child on 16 March 2024, who was residing with her grandparents.
The officers worked tirelessly with various government departments, including Health, Social Development, Education, Home Affairs, and SASSA, in Douglas, to secure her birth certificate and a place in a Hopetown school for the 2025 academic year.
A local hair salon also spoiled her with a new hairstyle while the SAPS members purchased the school uniform and school supplies, she needed to start her schooling career.
The culmination of their efforts was a truly special moment as they accompanied the young girl to school for her very first day. She is currently residing with her aunt in Hopetown.
The SAPS Management applauded the officers from Belmont SAPS for their noble gesture in responding to the need, going beyond their call of duty and commended all the relevant role-players for assisting in the betterment of the life and future of the young girl.
The Belmont SAPS will continue to monitor her well-being and progress at school.
