Joshua Ramathemela, a security guard at Glenvista Village, is being hailed a hero after he dove into the communal swimming pool and saved a 4-year-old.
Johannesburg, South Africa (29 October 2020) – Fatima Gani a resident at Glenvista Village shared a truly inspiring story about the security guard on duty that saved a life. Fatima was in awe of his actions and his reluctance to accept praise.
Fatima explained that there was a traumatic incident at the communal swimming pool. A 4-year-old child had been at the water unattended and fallen in. When the children noticed, they started screaming.
Security guard Joshua Ramathemela was on duty. He didn’t hesitate for a moment and sprinted towards the pool area at top speed, without pausing, he dove straight into the pool and pulled the child from the water. He was in his full uniform and once they were sure the child was fine, all thanks to his speedy reaction, Joshua set off back to his post.
“This young man is Joshua Ramathemela. He is employed as a security guard at the complex. Yesterday we heard kids screaming at the pool and then saw Joshua running like the wind. When I got to the pool, Joshua had jumped in, clothes and all and managed to get the 4-year-old out of the water. There was no parental supervision and this scene could have been devastating had Joshua hesitated a bit or arrived a few seconds later.
JOSHUA RAMATHEMELA is surely a hero who saved the day. Not all heroes wear capes. (And after rescuing the kid, Joshua didn’t stick around for any applause. He went back to his work station, got a pair of shorts and continued his duties just like any other day.)”
The reason Fatima feels Joshua should be hailed a hero is that his actions we nothing short of heroic and a life was saved thanks to his efforts.
So it is with that, we too honour Joshua and thank him for inspiring South Africa with his actions. While he feels he was just doing his job, we know he went above and beyond! Thank you, Joshua! Today we honour you.
