A submission from a reader reminded us of how important SA’s independent security teams are!

Johannesburg (08 October 2025) – Our trusted neighbourhood security teams are often the first responders to show up in scary, life-threatening moments like the one we heard about this week.

“On Monday evening, 29 September 2025, at around 9:30 pm, an alert went out to Sentinel Protection, a local security company, about a business robbery in progress on Anvil Street, Robertville. Without hesitation, one of their employees jumped into action,” shares our reader.

When the security team got there, the situation was tense, but bravery took the wheel.

“But rather than wait, the Sentinel officer immediately teamed up with the South African Police Service (SAPS), Florida, the Johannesburg K9 Unit, and several other first responders. Together, they entered the premises to secure the area and protect staff members who were trapped inside,” our reader says.

Quick-thinking and sharp eyes from the heroic team then led to the relief of two others…

“While moving through the site, the [security officer] discovered two security guards who had been locked inside a shipping container. Without a second thought, they helped release the guards, bringing relief, safety, and a powerful reminder of human kindness in the midst of chaos,” our reader adds.

If it hadn’t been for the heroes’ swift intervention on the scene, who knows what could have happened. Thankfully, they were saved.

“By the time the team secured the scene, the suspects had already fled, likely scaling the rear wall on foot. But thanks to the quick response and calm coordination between the Sentinel team and SAPS, no one was harmed. The site was safely handed over to the authorities for investigation,” the submission reads.

Later, according to our source, a vehicle believed to have been used by the suspects was also recovered, fitted with two sets of license plates (one of which turned out to be fake). The four criminals (two armed) had allegedly gained access by pretending to be an e-hailing service collecting staff members.

“While the robbers escaped, they didn’t win, because this story isn’t about them. It’s about the people who showed up. The ones who acted fast, thought clearly, and put others first. The bravery and teamwork between Sentinel Protection, SAPS, and the Johannesburg K9 Unit remind us that there are good people working hard every single day to keep South Africans safe,” our source says.

And that’s exactly what we love to celebrate, because even in moments of fear and uncertainty, there are always good things happening, and good people leading the way.
