A South African runner whose transport broke down, resorted to hitchhiking to get there… and then won the race!
Knysna, South Africa – How do you overcome a rough day when your transport option breaks down, you resort to hitchhiking and arrive late in the evening to register for a marathon?
You win, that’s how a champion heart responds.
Siviwe Wizzy – who runs for Murray & Roberts – ran into a slight problem while on the way to the Knysna Forest Marathon which took place on the 29 June 2019. The transport he had broke down and the passionate athlete had to resort to hitchhiking to make it to registration.
He stood on the side of the N2 highway, hoping to get from George to Knysna in time, waiting for someone to assist.
It’s no secret that crime is at an all-time high, and stopping to pick a random stranger up on the side of the road is not normality anywhere in the world, but a kind South African decided to do just that and his act of kindness meant Siviwe could get to the registration on time.
Siviwe not only registered to run, but won the 42,2km marathon in a time of 2:33:21 beating Retsepile Khotle and Bernard Rukadza by 4 minutes, and 6 minutes respectively!
Kim Nicola shared the great news on her Facebook and many who have seen the post, have applauded Siviwe for his determination and the random stranger who helped him get there!
Alfred Thorpe Mental commented: “Strength, more valuable than physical strength can ever be.”
Linda Stephens added: “What a wonderful story! So well done. He will now be properly looked after for sure!”
Yolanda Collins posted: “He determination is amazing! Well done to him against all odds. We could all take a page out of his book…”
Siviwe was just thankful for everyone’s support.
“Thank you so much, everyone, for your lovely messages and support #much appreciated.”
