Thousands of community members came to the rescue of an animal shelter in Johannesburg who were desperate for water during the heatwave.

The South African Weather Service issued warnings of heatwave conditions over the weekend in Johannesburg (and other parts of the country) with the mercury expected to hit over 42°C.

They issued warnings to keep hydrated and stay in cool areas but unfortunately various areas within the Honeydew Precinct had no water at all over the very hot weekend, due to a burst water pipe in the area.

The Randburg SPCA was one of the affected areas and was desperately in need of water for all their shelter animals.

Luckily and thanks to the power of social media, one simple request on a Facebook group to assist the animal shelter quickly went viral on various WhatsApp groups, social media sites and messages.

And the response was completely overwhelming!

Thousands of community members came to the rescue of the shelter by delivering water, ice, food and even treats for the animals suffering in the heatwave.

“Thank you to each and every community member for dropping off water off this afternoon. Your generosity is just amazing.

Imagine the world we would live in, if we could all find it in our hearts to support each other in our time of need. To all the amazing people that chose to care, thank-you with tears in my eyes and joy in my heart.

This is MY SOUTH AFRICA.”
