The Feed5000 Initiative has been ensuring that homeless people receive meals during the festive season for the past 10 years!

Cape Town, South Africa (17 December 2024) — For ten special years, the Feed5000 Initiative has been working hard to ensure that homeless people in Cape Town receive meals over the festive season.

As many meal providers take time off over the restful part of the season, the hungriest Capetonians are unfortunately left without a place to turn for something to fill their tummies.

Roeland Street-based The Hope Exchange, which regularly feeds the City’s homeless, decided long ago that a break wasn’t worth the hunger that would ensue. Especially not when other people are enjoying delicious meals with family and friends, and especially not when there are so many people flooding the Mother City for the holidays who might be able to lend a hand.

Their promise, alongside feeding-focused charity Ladles of Love, is that no one will be forgotten. It’s a promise they’ve kept year after year with each nutritious meal served and each warm smile received in return.

Last year, volunteers helped serve almost 15,000 meals to people who most needed it over the period, including a very successful Christmas Day in which 687 people got to enjoy a merry meal of roasted chicken, salad and cake as well as something sweet to take home.

This year, the Feed5000 Initiative is running from 16 December to 12 January. And with 10 years to celebrate, this year’s prospects look to be even brighter than the last!

However, no hopeful wishes can be fulfilled without the help and kindness of volunteers.

The Hope Exchange team promises a rewarding experience, a lot of love, and the gift of knowing you have helped make a difference.

All those interested in lending a ladle or a little time can book their slots via this calendar. If you can’t help in person, you can also make a donation to support the food funding!
