After severe flash floods caused havoc along the South Coast, Tidy Towns and the people of Margate pulled together in an incredible act of community love and care to restore Margate’s beauty:

Margate, South Africa (18 April 2024) — South Africa’s weather has certainly been on a bender recently, with parts of the South Coast experiencing destructive and devastating flash floods.

Margate found itself in the thick of the flash floods, with a whole lot of havoc left in the community’s midst. But, thanks to the legendary Tidy Towns Shelly to Margate team and the superheroes of the area, help has not been far away!

Seeing the matter as an “opportunity for positive change and growth,” Stephen Herbst of Tidy Towns reminded his community to put in the work, clean-up the chaos, and crack on with what needed to be done.

From beach bar workers to church members, kids, authorities, those who lent heavy duty equipment to make a difference and those who used their hands and spirits to turn the tables on the weather’s wrath, the community’s effort to restore Margate Main beach has been nothing short of remarkable over the past few days.

“We are just ecstatic about this community work and collaboration, this Margate Beach has provided so many memories for so many people and families, it’s time we pampered her a little, and restore her to better condition than before,”—Stephen shared.

“Our community truly is a gem and we are so grateful for all the support we have received. South Africans never cease to amaze us with their kindness and generosity,” he further commended.

In times where it seems the odds are stacked against us, the easiest thing to do is fall into the trap of negativity. But as we always say at GTG, in times of crisis, look for the helpers. The positive ones. The action takers. And then, become one of them.

That’s a wrap for today, I am humbled as a South Coaster, as a community member. The South Coast community is just special. Photo Credit: Stephen Herbst
