“I also sing to them on occasion if I am positively certain that no one else is within earshot – Whitney Houston seems to be a fan favourite.” – Luvania Govender, SPCA Volunteer
Gauteng, South Africa (23 February 2023) – The SPCA Benoni shared a heartfelt post about a volunteer who spends her spare time reading (and sometimes singing) to orphaned dogs and cats… and it’s giving us all the feels.
Luvania Govender volunteers at the Benoni SPCA and spends her spare time reading to dogs and cats who have been orphaned and are waiting for their forever homes. The kind South African spends time with the orphaned animals as she believes it’s vital for them to have someone engage with them with a soothing activity.
“I also sing to them on occasion if I am positively certain that no one else is within earshot – Whitney Houston seems to be a fan favourite.”
She loves sharing Roald Dahl stories and other books that she thinks contain joyful and uplifting messages.
“The Little Prince” by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry seems to entertain them, and simultaneously helps to heal my own inner child.”
“I chose the Benoni SPCA because it has played a significant role in my life growing up – it is a mere five minutes away from my house – making it exceptionally convenient to visit often or make donations. I volunteered here in my matric year and had my first animal volunteering experience here when I joined the Wildlife Club in primary school. The SPCA also featured on my Environmental Law portfolio cover that dealt with vesting nature and animals with rights. So the Benoni SPCA definitely holds a special place in my heart.”
Govender was never allowed to have pets, so she figured that whenever she had the means, financially or some time to spare, she would spend it in the company of animals.
“I also just talk to them, give them treats, pet them, and give them boops on the nose because it’s fun to do. Basically, I just wanted to keep the fur babies company until they are able to find their forever homes (or until I become a millionaire and adopt all of them myself, haha – whichever happens first).”
Govender hoped her post would inspire others to help the abandoned and orphaned pets.
