Floods may have taken away Trevor’s home, but in doing so, they also touched the heart of a school community that is rising to help their beloved traffic controller rebuild.
Westville, South Africa (20 March 2026) – When tragedy strikes, it is always remarkably inspiring to witness how our communities rise to support one another, refusing to let any individual suffer or rebuild alone.
When recent floods took the one thing that gave Trevor security, his home, his devastation was met with immediate compassion from his school community.
Trevor, the friendly traffic controller outside Westville Girls’ High School, is known and adored for his big smile, high‑fives to kids, and the positivity he brings to learners, parents and teachers every single day.
“During the recent floods, Trevor lost his home and all his belongings. He has managed to secure a place to rent, but he has almost nothing to fill it with. He is currently sleeping on a broken mattress on the floor,” the school shared.
Moved to improve his circumstances and support him during this hard time, the school has now organised a community collection drive to help Trevor rebuild.
Westville Community Group is currently rallying for household items in good condition that the greater community is able to donate. These can be dropped off at Westville Girls’ High School on Langford Road entrance on Sundays from 9 am to 11 am.
“WGHS has kindly offered their premises as a storage and sorting point — they said yes before we even finished explaining why we needed the space. That’s the spirit of Westville.”
The school also assured that any items beyond what Trevor needs will be shared with other people in the area who are also struggling.
So far, the response from the public has been truly heartwarming, with many praising Trevor’s dedication and calls to open a crowdfunding campaign to support him.
