One blood donation can make a life-changing difference. Find out how to get involved in the Western Cape Blood Service’s Red November campaign.

Western Cape, South Africa (05 November 2026) – November has become synonymous with shopping specials, big discounts and the excitement of finding a bargain. But while many South Africans will be filling their shopping carts this month, the Western Cape Blood Service (WCBS) is encouraging people to consider a different kind of saving, one that could mean everything to someone else.

Through its Red November – Give One, Save Three campaign, WCBS is calling on both regular and first-time donors to roll up their sleeves and donate blood. The message is simple: one donation can make a remarkable difference, potentially helping save up to three lives.

It’s a reminder worth sharing, especially as we head towards the busy festive season.

A single unit of donated blood can be separated into three important components: red blood cells, platelets and plasma. Each has a different role to play in medical treatment, helping hospitals care for patients with a wide range of conditions. What might take just a little time out of someone’s day can become an extraordinary gift for someone facing a medical emergency or undergoing treatment.

“This November, we want to shift the focus from filling your shopping cart to making the ultimate saving,” says Marike Carli, Public Relations Manager at WCBS. “While everyone is hunting for the best deals, we encourage people to give something priceless, the gift of life.”

And the timing matters. Blood stock shortages often occur in the lead-up to and during the festive season, when maintaining a reliable supply becomes particularly important. WCBS is getting ahead of the rush by encouraging people to donate now, helping ensure hospitals have the blood they need throughout this busy period.

There are several opportunities to get involved this November. On Friday, 27 November, WCBS will host a special blood donation clinic at its Head Office in N’dabeni, open from 07:00 to 14:00. Everyone is welcome.

On Saturday, 28 November, donors can also visit centres at Blue Route Mall, Kenilworth Centre, Cape Gate Shopping Centre, Somerset Mall and N1 City between 09:00 and 15:00. Hart & Bosch Village in Hartenbos will be open from 10:00 to 14:00.

If you’re wondering whether you can donate, the basic requirements are straightforward. You should be between 16 and 75 years old, weigh at least 50kg, be in generally good health and lead a safe sexual lifestyle. Donors are encouraged to drink plenty of fluids before and after giving blood.

So, while November might be the month of Black Friday deals, perhaps the most meaningful thing you can give won’t come with a price tag. It could simply be an hour of your time, a little kindness and the chance to help someone else see another tomorrow.
