When flames ripped through a family’s home, leaving them with nothing but severe burns, South Africans gathered whatever they could to deliver a bakkie-load of hope – giving the family the strength to rebuild and the comfort of knowing they are not alone.
Johannesburg, South Africa (15 July 2026) – Even in the face of devastating tragedy, South Africans continue to prove that hope is remarkably resilient.
A little over a week ago, a family from Zandspruit lost their entire life’s belongings to a devastating fire in their informal home and suffered severe, life-altering injuries.
The nightmare began on the morning of 5 July at approximately 06:05 am. Khomotso, a 30-year-old security officer, received a call from his neighbours informing him that his home was on fire. At the time, his wife and their two young children, a five-year-old daughter and a two-year-old son, were trapped inside. Because the family lacks access to electricity, it is suspected that a candle sparked the blaze.
After efforts to get the family out, they were rushed to Helen Joseph Hospital to treat their severe burns. Since then, they have been split across medical facilities to receive specialised care.
Khomotso’s wife has been transferred to Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital (Bara), where she is currently in the ICU with 40% burns. Her road to recovery is expected to be long and difficult.
Their two children are currently receiving treatment at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital (Johannesburg General).
The fire spared nothing. In a matter of minutes, the family lost every single possession they owned, including their beds, blankets, clothing, wardrobes, bags, pots, cutlery, and groceries.
After learning about this tragedy, People4Purpose NPC stepped in, sending out an urgent social media call to the public to help the family rebuild their lives from scratch.
The plea did not fall on deaf ears. South Africans have been rallying to turn this unforeseen tragedy into a story of shared hope.
“We were able to send the Dad [Khomotso] a sizeable financial contribution today, for which he is extremely grateful,” People4Purpose shared in an update yesterday.
A bakkie loaded with furniture, household items, two beds, linen and blankets also made its way to Zandspruit to help the family start over. People4Purpose will also purchase glass to replace all the windows and do some waterproofing on the roof of the damaged home.
“While mom remains in an induced coma, we know that she and the children will have a little home to return to,” said the gratful organisation.
Only the compassion and community spirit of our people could turn a story of loss and devastation into one that warms the heart. Whether through a financial contribution, a piece of furniture, or simply sharing the appeal online, we join the organisation in thanking every person who responded so swiftly and selflessly to this family’s plight.
