Ofentse Lekalakala has turned the stereotypical chatter about being a woman in mining into her power and built a business that helps everyone thrive in the industry.
Marikana, South Africa (11 September 2023) – When asked why she didn’t consider catering or cleaning services as a business, Ofentse Lekalakala said, “Why can’t I do mining?”. She is a successful CEO and woman in mining, breaking barriers and showing that women do have a place in the industry.
Ofentse started her company, Golaotswe Mining Services, with a dream of inspiring other women to do the jobs that ignite their souls, specifically within traditionally male-dominated fields. For her, it was working at local mines, where she specialises in engineering maintenance.
She refused to listen to the people who said she should stick to catering or cleaning and, today, is an inspiration for local women by breaking barriers in the industry. Not only does her business serve as a pillar for those striving to push boundaries and challenge stereotypes, but she is educating the next generation through skills transfer, and that is making the most significant difference of all.
Having just earned a five-year contract with Sibanye-Stillwater in Marikana, she can use her business to make a difference in her very own community. Her goal is to equip future generations to succeed in the industry.
Ofentse attributes her success to the company’s support of her own business. Her journey illustrates how determination and resilience can transform an individual into an inspirational force within their industry.
