It’s almost that time of year again, where South Africans get to select the recipients of their Santa Shoebox pledges and this is why it matters:
South Africa (18 August 2025) – There’s something about the first day of Santa Shoebox pledges opening that sparks festive magic. Not the “too-many-sweets” kind of excitement, though there’s plenty of sugar involved, but the joy that comes from imagining a little pair of hands untying a ribbon, lifting a lid, and finding a box of surprises that says: you are seen, you are special, you matter.
The Santa Shoebox Project has been a South African favourite for years, bringing smiles to children and teens across South Africa and Namibia .Within hours of pledges opening, thousands of names are chosen by generous supporters each year. Over 1.3 million children have been gifted boxes since the founding of the project and that nymber grows with every pledge made.
Those names aren’t just numbers; they’re real children with their own dreams, challenges, and hopes for the festive season. And the beauty of this project is how personal it feels, pledgers get to choose a beneficiary by name and age, which means you’re not just buying “a toothbrush” or “a toy”, you’re buying their toothbrush and imagining their smile.
How it works
Anyone, anywhere in the world, can get involved. South Africans can pledge a physical box to drop off locally, while international supporters or those short on time can opt for a virtual box, which is lovingly packed by volunteers.
Each box contains eight required items: a toothbrush, toothpaste, a bar of soap, a washcloth, an outfit, educational supplies, sweets, and a toy. Beyond the checklist, there’s the magic of decorating the box, adding a handwritten note, or slipping in small extras that make it unique.
Drop-offs happen in late October and early November, and the atmosphere during those weeks is electric, a hive of people pouring love, time, and thought into each box.
Why it matters
For many of the children who receive these boxes, it’s the only gift they’ll get all year. It’s a reminder that someone out there cares, that they are valued, and that joy is still possible. It’s a small act that leaves a big mark, not just in December, but long after the wrapping paper is gone.
