From a childhood love of animals, Shaygam continues to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome strays across his community.

Hout Bay, South Africa (24 June 2026) – In a quiet corner of Hout Bay, one man’s home has become a sanctuary for animals with nowhere else to go.

This story first came to light after Ethan Storm Films shared a video highlighting Shaygam’s work in his community, sparking renewed attention to a mission he has been living for years.

Shaygam’s dedication to animals has not gone unnoticed over the years. His work has inspired support from individuals, organisations and local businesses. Among them was Cape Town-based vegan and vegetarian restaurant PLANT Cape Town, which previously hosted a “Party with Purpose” fundraising event to collect donations, food, supplies and veterinary support for the animals in his care.

This recent clip once again puts his passion for animals back in the spotlight. Today, he continues to open his gates and his heart to every animal in need, refusing to turn any away. His mission is to make sure every animal deserves care, dignity and a second chance.

“I love and I’m here. My dream is to take care of all the homeless animals who don’t have homes,” he says.

For him, the work is deeply personal. Growing up without stability, he found comfort in animals long before he had the means to care for them properly. That early connection shaped the path he walks today.

“I didn’t choose them. They chose me.”

His home is filled with animals that are not just rescues, but family. Some remain with him permanently, while others are taken in and rehomed where possible. But none are ever turned away.

From feeding, treatment, and, where possible, sterilisation to help control the growing number of strays in the community.
