A Gauteng traffic officer is expected to appear in court on Tuesday after he was arrested for soliciting a bribe, the Road Traffic Management Corporation said on Saturday.
RTMC have been out in full force over the Easter weekend,
“Our operations are 24/7. We’re appealing to drivers to use the rules of the road, not speed over the stipulated guidelines, not drink & drive & to take rest breaks every two hours or every 200km.”
But the RTMC are not just targeting road users, they have also made the decision to deploy undercover Anti-Corruption units across the country to make sure the people enforcing rules, are also abiding but them.
RTMC spokesperson Simon Zwane in a statement said the officer was operating a speed trap when he stopped an undercover member of the National Traffic Anti-Corruption Unit for speeding.
“It is alleged that the officer then demanded a R100 bribe from the undercover official. The Hawks were called in and the officer was arrested. A cash sum of R4 000 was found in his possession.”
Zwane said the officer is employed by the Randfontein municipality.
“The RTMC commends the anti-corruption unit for making the arrest and says this is evidence of government’s determination to deal with corruption within the traffic law enforcement fraternity,” said Zwane.
