At just 9 years old, Ikenna Tladi signs a 7-year deal with AS Roma Academy, becoming one of the youngest South Africans to sign with a European football giant

Johannesburg, South Africa (10 July 2025) – In a move that is turning heads across South Africa, football prodigy Ikenna Tladi is set for the global stage. Doing what a few could dream of at just 9 years old, being linked to a long-term deal with Italian football giants AS Roma.

Filled with ambition, Ikenna is taking his first steps onto European soil by signing a 7-year contract with AS Roma Academy. Making this an incredible achievement, not just because it is rare for such a young player to sign a long contract, but also a leap that is rewriting the playbook for young African football talent.

Born in Wolmaransstad in the North West province, he officially put pen to paper, securing his future for the next 7 years. Ikenna’s shot at stardom came when a few of his YouTube videos grabbed international attention while he was still playing for Old Eds FC in Johannesburg.

Ikenna had already made waves in January 2025, forming part of Roma’s youth set-up where he was named Player of the Tournament. This makes him one of the youngest South African players to be accepted into a top European academy. His natural talent and understanding of the game have consistently caught the attention of scouts.

Other South African players who have grabbed international attention are the likes of 13-year-old Camden Schaper from Benoni, who recently signed with English giants, Chelsea Football Club.

As part of this programme, Ikenna will benefit from world-class football training and a structured education, all within one of Europe’s most respected development environments.

Local coaches and supporters have called his move a moment of pride for football in Bokone Bophirima and proof that world-class talent continues to rise from South Africa’s rural regions.

What does the future look like for Ikenna? It is becoming increasingly clear that more South African youngsters are rising through the ranks and making a mark for themselves on the global stage. Just like Ikenna’s case, this experience is a stepping stone that will elevate him to wear green and gold, representing South Africa in international football.
