Alwande Sikhosana has scored his spot for the 2024 Paris Paralympics after dominating in gold in Ghana!
Accra, Ghana (11 September 2023) — While the teams representing South Africa continue to bring in proud moments for our country at the Africa Para Games in Ghana, one South African has already earned a future filled with more great international moments; securing a spot in the 2024 Paris Paralympics!
23-year-old Alwande Sikhosana will hoist our flag high at the most prestigious competition in the world for para-athletes after winning the proudly South African final.
The golden ticket confirmation came after Sikhosana and Leon Els swiftly made it to the finals of the wheelchair tennis tournament at the Games following a string of wins individually and as a team. Fresh from their doubles gold medal and victory against Morocco’s Lhaj Bouckartacha and Said Himan, Sunday saw the local champs face each other.
Here, Sikhosana navigated a smooth win against Els—6-2, 6-3.
Now, Sikhosana has become the first out of the two wheelchair tennis stars to score a spot for the 2024 Paris Paralympics and stretch his competitive muscles against the world’s finest para players.
Meanwhile, Team SA’s wheelchair basketball teams are also playing on the winner’s court, with the men’s team beating Kenya in a recent match while the women’s team continue their unbeaten winning streak at the Games heading straight for the finals.
