Defender Bambanani Mbane celebrated her 100th international appearance as Banyana Banyana edged Algeria in a friendly in KwaMashu.

KwaMashu, South Africa (16 April 2026) – It was a landmark night for Banyana Banyana defender Bambanani Mbane, who made her 100th international appearance as South Africa secured a hard-fought 1-0 win over Algeria at Princess Magogo Stadium in KwaMashu.

The experienced centre-back joined an elite group of just a handful of players to reach the century mark in national colours, adding another proud milestone to a career that began in 2016 when she made her debut in a 3-0 win over Botswana at Makhulong Stadium in Tembisa. Mbane becomes only the 12th player in Banyana Banyana history to reach 100 caps.

And fittingly, the team delivered a disciplined performance to mark the occasion, with Nthabiseng Majiya stepping up in the first half to score the only goal of the game. Her 35th-minute strike from the edge of the penalty area was struck with precision, leaving the Algerian goalkeeper with no chance.

The fixture formed part of a two-match friendly series between the sides, as both teams continue their preparations for the 2026 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), which has been rescheduled to July.

Speaking after the match, Banyana Banyana coach Desiree Ellis reflected on the performance and the importance of squad rotation during this international window.

“I am happy with the result, but we can still improve on the performance. But it was not an easy game as we have not played together since last year, yes some were involved in the COSAFA Cup but not all of them, so it was important to give other players minutes.”

Ellis also paid special tribute to Mbane on her milestone appearance, highlighting her leadership and consistency within the squad.

“True professional. Someone you can rely on. Never lets you down. Mentor to the younger players as well. And so well-deserved.”

Attention now shifts quickly to the second and final match of the series, where Banyana Banyana will once again face Algeria at King Zwelithini Stadium in Umlazi on Friday.

But for Mbane, Tuesday night will stand out as a career highlight. 100 caps and a victory to mark a truly special milestone in green and gold.
