It’s unofficially Banyana Banyana Day after our iconic team made history by making it through to the World Cup knockout stage after a victory against Italy!

Wellington, New Zealand (02 August, 2023) — Banyana Banyana have made history today after an incredible victory against Italy in the FIFA Women’s World Cup. Now, the South African team will head to the World Cup knockouts in a first for Mzansi!

The nail-biting match happened today at the Wellington Regional Stadium in New Zealand where Banyana Banyana emerged victorious against Italy (who ranks higher than them in soccer) with a score of 3-2. This win pushed our heroines through to their first World Cup knockouts and World Cup win; making their swarm of supporters say ‘I knew we could do it!’.

South Africans around the country had placed their hopes on a victory like this; even when the ground seemed shaky after Banyana Banya’s loss to Sweden.

Supporters reminded them that they still carry Africa’s hopes and dreams and that they are still champions.

Today, social media lit up in favour of the team; with congratulatory messages springing up from all over the world.

Their joy only epitomises how much the moment means to our country and the team who worked under a lot of pressure.

“The Banyana Banyana victory answered the question “how do you win under such scrutiny and pressure?”  The answer is consciousness – you need to be conscious all the time. There is simply no place to hide, and where there is no place to hide, honesty is the only sustainable answer. Well done Banyana Banyana,”—Dr Irvin Khoza, Premier Soccer League Chairman.

The World Cup knockouts will see the stars go toe-to-toe against the Netherlands, this time in Sydney on Sunday.
