Thrown into the starting XV at the last minute, Bathobele Hlekani announced himself in style, scoring on his debut and receiving Man of the Match.

Johannesburg, South Africa (12 January 2026) – Bathobele Hlekani wasted no time announcing himself in Lions colours as he delivered a dream debut that turned heads at Ellis Park over the weekend. Included in the starting 15, the 20-year-old flanker responded with a try, a full 80-minute shift and a Man of the Match performance as the Lions edged Lyon 42–33 in their EPCR Challenge Cup clash.

Originally named on the bench, Bathobele was promoted moments before kick-off after Siba Qoma was ruled out during the warm-up. Bathobele joined the Johannesburg-based side quite recently from the Sharks, but fitting in seemed easy for the powerful forward, feeling right at home in his red and white kit.

Lions head coach Ivan van Rooyen was full of praise for the Gqeberha-born back-rower, highlighting his work ethic. Captain Francke Horn also played a key role in settling the debutant early on, offering reassurance and keeping instructions simple.

His rise at the provincial level follows a standout year in junior rugby. He was part of the Junior Springbok side that made history by ending a 13-year wait for World Rugby U20 Championship glory, defeating New Zealand 23–15 in the final in Rovigo, Italy. That victory completed a remarkable chapter for South African rugby.

This progress has not gone unnoticed. Just a few months ago, he was one of three Junior Springboks invited into a Springbok training camp as South Africa prepared for their Castle Lager Rugby Championship showdown against Australia. Proof of how highly rated he is within the national setup.

Signing him was a big win for the Lions, and his debut showed they made the right call.

The Lions now turn their attention to France, where they face Perpignan in their next Challenge Cup fixture, and Bathobele Hlekani firmly announced himself as a name to watch.
