Eric Zwane, a dude who traded soccer boots for boxing gloves because… well, boredom, has become a knockout sensation!

Durban, South Africa (04 April 2025) – It was boredom that inspired Eric Zwane to get up on his feet and do something completely out of his ordinary – take up boxing!

The young man who hails from Dumbe and is a first-year student at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) used to play soccer before transitioning to boxing.

After moving to a new area a few years ago, he soon noticed that soccer wasn’t as popular as it was back home and because sports still remained a key interest, Eric decided to distract himself from boredom by trying himself out at boxing and ended up falling in love with the sport!

Turns out he doesn’t just love boxing but he’s seriously good at it too, as DUT reveals! Eric shone at a Thulamlomo Boxing Tournament hosted at Estcourt Town Hall recently, where in just 50 seconds of the first round, he impressively TKO’ed out his opponent.

This fight was the 23-year-old’s third professional match and his second first-round knockout in 50 seconds of the first round – a truly great success.

Eric claimed that even though the fight was to improve his rankings in boxing, he was satisfied with his victory.

“I am very ecstatic for my victory. It shows that I have great potential in professional boxing, noting that this is just my third professional fight. Although, I was hoping that I would fight all the rounds, but unfortunately it did not happen. The fight only lasted for 50 seconds in the first round,’’ Eric explained.

With a trophy cabinet already bursting with wins from the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) Games, KZN Championships and the RSA Championships as well as being named KZN Best Male Boxer in 2017, Eric’s now aiming for the big leagues!

The rising boxer was congratulated by his former coach, Njabulo Nkosi who encouraged him to turn to professional boxing – a goal that is right up Eric’s alley as he hopes to one day hold one of the most respected belts in South Africa, like celebrated SA Champions.
