Cape Town has been chosen to host one of the biggest sporting events in cycling: the UCI Marathon World Championships!
Cape Town, South Africa (08 August, 2023) — Adding another world sports event to its hosting repertoire, Cape Town has been selected as the host city for the UCI Marathon World Championships, and the wheels of excitement are already turning.
This follows a series of hosting opportunities the City has already celebrated including the Netball World Cup, the Formula E, the Women’s Ice Hockey Championship and the T20 Women’s Cricket World Cup amongst others.
This year’s edition of the UCI Marathon World Championships saw Glasgow and various parts of Scotland host mountain bikers and cyclists from around the world and of all skill levels. Here, South Africa got the nod of approval to host the bikes of the future come 2028.
Described as the biggest cycling competition with multiple world championship events across sub-disciplines, the Marathon World Championships are known for being a test of many skills.
Bravery, fitness, discipline and a deeply rooted passion for what’s possible on two wheels are just a few elements that rally cyclists to compete, and South Africa couldn’t be more thrilled to host the epicness.
“We are very excited to have succeeded in our bid to host the UCI Marathon World Championships in 2028. Mountain biking has become a very strong discipline in South Africa, not only as a sport, but also as a recreational activity.
“The Western Cape is [a] big mountain biking region in South Africa and hosts many of our country’s biggest events and is a favourite cycling tourism destination for international visitors.”—Cycling South Africa President Qondisa Ngwenya shared.
“Major sporting events continue bringing renewed hope and energy to the people of our country…
“Large cycling events like the Cape Town Cycle Tour and the Cape Epic continue to be very popular and the addition of the UCI World Championships will boost cycling even more in the province.”—adds Minister Anroux Marais.
