Greg Minnaar has become a 4-time world champion after winning the title at UCI Mountain Bike World Championships in Italy.

Val di Sole, Italy (06 September 2021) – Greg Minnaar, born and raised in Pietermaritzburg, has just earned his fourth world championship and at the age of 39. Although, as he says it, “age is just a number my brus”.

His first title was earned in 2003 in Switzerland. The second title was earned in 2012 in Austria and the third, here in South Africa, Pietermaritzburg, in 2013. Now, eight years later, he is champion once more.

The UCI Mountain Bike World Championship is a world championship event for mountain bike racing in the disciplines of cross country, downhill, and four-cross.

Minnaar completed the downhill race in 3:28.963, earning himself a gold medal to go along with the title. The race took place over a period of five days.

Greg is being called the greatest for also having this win be his 12th podium at the UCI Mountain Bike World Championship.

“Four times for South Africa and I’m really proud I could do that.

Still feels surreal the morning after and I do find it hard to fully claim a win when others have given it their all, and had a tough time, but I want to take this opportunity to try and inspire as many people as possible to get out on a bike – no matter age, race, background or gender. Mountain biking is, and will always be, a really great community to be a part of.

Oh, and…age is just a number my brus

One final time, I really want to say thanks again for everyone involved: the team, sponsors, family, friends and especially the crowd – what a crowd! I couldn’t have done it without you all, so thanks to you. We did this together”

Greg is currently competing in a second event, this time in Lenzerheide, Switzerland, at the Mercedes-Benz UCI Mountain Bike World Cup.
