Cricket South Africa officially capped the U19 squad as they gear up to carry the nation’s hopes at the ICC Men’s Under-19 World Cup.

Johannesburg, South Africa (07 January 2026) – The Junior Proteas are gearing up for a major global challenge as South Africa’s Under-19 men’s team prepares to compete on the world stage, carrying the pride and expectations of a cricket-loving nation.

Cricket South Africa hosted a capping ceremony yesterday, where the players were officially presented with their blazers, a symbolic moment that honoured the privilege of representing the country. The ceremony marked an important milestone for the squad as they prepare to depart for the ICC Men’s Under-19 World Cup.

Led by captain Muhammad Bulbulia, the Junior Proteas will be targeting their first Under-19 World Cup title since 2014. This year’s tournament marks the 16th edition of the competition and is expected to be fiercely contested.

South Africa has been drawn in Group D alongside the West Indies, Afghanistan and Tanzania. Their campaign will get underway on 16 January when they face Afghanistan at the HP Oval in Windhoek.

Before the tournament begins, the team will fine-tune their preparations with a three-match Youth ODI series against India. The matches played at Willowmoore Park in Benoni conclude on 7 January 2026, providing valuable exposure against strong opposition ahead of the global showpiece.

Head coach Malibongwe Maketa has been encouraged by the growth he has seen within the group over time.

“What has impressed me most is the growth these players have shown. From meeting them as 16-year-olds to seeing who they are now, it’s clear we’re developing not just cricketers, but good young men for this country.

“Cricket-wise, their understanding of the intensity required at international level has been outstanding. They’ve gone back to work with their coaches and returned with a new level of intent at every session, exactly what’s needed to compete at a World Cup.”

With the formalities complete, the Junior Proteas now turn their focus to delivering performances that reflect their growth and ambition on the international stage.
