South Africa will compete in the newly rebranded 16-team World Rugby Junior World Championship in Georgia, carrying strong momentum after their victory over New Zealand.
South Africa (16 January 2026) – A new chapter in age-grade rugby is set to kick off in 2026, and South Africa will once again be at the heart of it.
World Rugby has officially confirmed that its premier men’s U20 competition will be rebranded as the World Rugby Junior World Championship, marking a shift not only in name, but in scale and identity. The expanded 16-team tournament will be hosted by Georgia from 27 June to 18 July 2026, with matches played across Tbilisi and Kutaisi over five action-packed weekends.
For the Junior Springboks, the announcement comes with familiar confidence. South Africa head into the tournament with a proud record at age-grade level, most notably ending a 13-year wait for silverware when they defeated New Zealand 23–15 in the final in Rovigo, Italy, a result that signalled the return of South Africa as a force in junior rugby.
That momentum now carries into a new-look competition designed to usher in the next generation of international stars. The 2026 edition will be the first since 2009 to feature 16 teams, bringing together established powerhouses and emerging nations as part of World Rugby’s push to grow the global game.
South Africa has been drawn into Pool A, where they will face Wales, hosts Georgia and Uruguay. Only the pool winners advancing directly to the semi-finals. Second-placed teams will contest positions five to eight, while the remaining sides will battle it out for final rankings.
The tournament also reflects rugby’s evolving identity, becoming the first international competition to trial a lowered tackle height, reinforcing World Rugby’s ongoing focus on player welfare and the long-term sustainability of the game.
Georgia, hosting the event for the second time after a memorable 2017 edition, will stage the final on 18 July at the Mikheil Meskhi Stadium in Tbilisi.
As the Junior Springboks prepare to take on a new format, the 2026 championship could be another defining chapter in the country’s age-grade rugby story.
