The Transplant Games are just days away so let’s get behind the team and let them know South Africa is cheering them on back at home.

South Africa (12 April 2023) – The World Transplant Games are just days away and we can do our bit to support Team SA. The games will be happening in Perth, Australia from the 15th of April to the 22nd of April 2023.

57 South African athletes have qualified to showcase their skills in Perth and 40 of those athletes will attend the Games in April. This is an opportunity for transplanted athletes to show their gratitude towards living donors and families of deceased donors.

This is a “Celebration of New Life” where athletes who have received solid organ or bone marrow transplants will compete in 13 different sports events over a week of fierce competition with over 1500 athletes from more than 60 nations:

  • Cycling
  • 5km Road race
  • Badminton
  • Table tennis
  • Tennis
  • Squash
  • Golf Ten Pin Bowling
  • Petanque
  • Darts
  • Lawn Bowls
  • Swimming
  • Track and Field
  • Athletics

This year Donor Families and Living Donors will also be taking part in selected sporting events as well.

About the Games

The World Transplant Games were established in 1978, and the Federation celebrates successful transplantation and the gift of life through unique and inspiring events – namely the Summer and Winter World Transplant Games.

“The World Transplant Games give recipients the motivation to strive towards full rehabilitation through exercise, camaraderie and healthy living. They also provide them with a way of saying ‘thank you’ to those who made it all possible – the donors, their families, health professionals, researchers and carers… Without them, there would be nobody on the starting line.” – World Transplant Games

The South Africa Transplant Sports Association

SATSA was founded by a group of organ recipients in 1994 under the then name “The Transplant Games Association of South Africa”. It was founded with the hope of promoting a healthy, active lifestyle and involvement in sports.

The association changed its name to The South African Transplant Sports Association in 2006. It is a recognised sporting association in both South Africa and the world. The games are held every two years and South Africa has attended each one to date.

SATSA is a non-profit organisation representing transplant recipients, donor families (including living donors), Health Care professionals involved in organ donation and transplantation, corporate businesses involved in transplantation and corporate business involved in funding and sponsorships.

The games are unfortunately not being aired on television so the best way to support the team, is to support them on social media. Please note, there is a rise in online scams where people are placing links in the comment sections of sporting posts, advising that it’s being streamed via that link – this is a scam and we urge you not to click on any links. We at Good Things Guy will do our best to keep you updated on how the team is doing in Perth for the duration of the games.

Another way you can support the team is by registering as an organ donor here. It may not help today, but one day you may be able to save several lives.
