The country’s top lifesaving athletes are balancing studies, work, and training while inspiring the next generation through competition and service.
Western Cape, South Africa (23 September 2025) – South Africa’s lifesaving athletes are showing us that dedication and resilience go hand in hand. Balancing morning training sessions, night studies, and family responsibilities, these athletes serve their communities through voluntary beach patrols.
With the Rescue Sport Series entering its second season, local lifeguards are stepping into the spotlight, showcasing their commitment to both sport and public safety.
As much as competing is about medals, it’s important to remember that it goes beyond that. The series is making bold moves as it aims to recruit 200 new lifeguards by 2027 and provide over 10,000 hours of volunteer water safety across Western Cape beaches and pools, blending athleticism with service.
Let’s introduce you to the squad, making sure that lives are saved!
Among the athletes making waves is Kira Bester, the youngest-ever Surf Ski World Champion, who dominated last season’s Western Cape Championships across both board and swim events.
Javin Presence has established himself as a beach powerhouse. The former Under-19 Flags champion now competes in the Open division, aiming for consistent top finishes and preparing for international events in New Zealand.
Nicola Harcus, who started in the Eastern Cape and now represents the Western Cape, has moved fully into the Opens division. A multi-time National Team representative, she sees the series as a way to perfect her skills across different beaches.
Conrad Scheepers, once a Tuks University swimmer, has found his way in lifesaving after joining Clifton Surf Lifesaving Club. Last season, he claimed multiple Open Men’s Pool Rescue titles and surprised himself with strong surf results, including a silver in the Board Relay.
These athletes are a reminder that lifesaving is about friendship and the drive to make a real difference. Season 2 of the Rescue Sport Series promises even more action, connection, and inspiration for South Africa’s next generation of lifesavers.
