Mpumelelo Mhlongo swooped in like a superstar and claimed the first gold medal for South Africa at the Para Athletics World Championships!
Global (20 May 2024) — Mpumelelo Mhlongo has claimed the first gold for South Africa at the Para Athletics World Championships currently underway at the Kobe Universiade Memorial Stadium in Japan!
A remarkable feat for the acclaimed para-athlete and Paralympic Games record holder; Mpumelelo’s gold has brought South Africa’s tally to a total of three podium placements at the World Championships thus far, with bronze making up the rest of our wins.
For the superstar no stranger to glory, Mpumelelo’s 11.36 clock stunt for the Men’s T44 100m was a welcomed moment of the kind of excellence South Africans know Mpumelelo for. This is not the first time Mpumelelo has bagged the first gold for South Africa at the Para Athletics biggest competition, either! Last year, the certified champion also scooped the top spot for team South Africa competing in Paris, first.
With five days to go until the Championships are over, hopes are high that the gold energy will carry South Africans onwards and upwards through the rest of the competitions as they vie for Paralympic qualifications and local pride.
Meanwhile, in other South African sport news, the first firing line of South Africans heading off to the Paris Olympic Games has been announced! You can catch up on all the incredible athletes who will be representing our country in their disciplines, here.
