The World Aquatics Swimming World Cup has seen South Africa’s Pieter Coetze relishing in victory! So far, the young swimmer has claimed an array of medals for SA with multiple gold medals in tow and Worlds isn’t even over yet!
Incheon, South Korea (30 October 2024) — South Africa’s Pieter Coetze has swum straight to success many times over during the 2024 World Aquatics Swimming World Cup, adding multiple gold medals to South Africa’s pot!
Worlds was already off to a strong start for the young swimmer who won medals in Shangai in the first leg of the Cup, which took place the week before. But the races in Incheon, South Korea (which came to an end this past Saturday) further solidified Pieter’s place as a force to be reckoned with and the force behind the bulk of Team South Africa’s medal tally.
After the second stop of Worlds, South Africa’s medal tally sits at thirteen with Pieter contributing seven medals to the count; five being gold. These were for the 50m backstroke, 100m backstroke (twice) and the 200m backstroke (also claimed twice).
Rebecca Meder pulled in her fair share of bronze for variations of breaststroke and the 200m individual medley , while Chad Le Clos’s count sits at two for the 100m and 200m butterfly.
So far, all the gold medals have Pieter’s name on them!
It’s a bold time for Pieter who, at last year’s Worlds, largely shared the spotlight with Matt Sates. With the final stop in Singapore still set to unfold, it’s a key time for the swimmer who’s coming into his own, and making strong foundations as the new generation’s backstroke champion.
