18-year-old South African Moto3 rider Ruche Moodley shares insights from his rookie season, the influence of his dad, and the passion driving his journey to the top.
Global (22 April 2025) – In the high-speed, high-pressure world of Moto3, South Africa’s Ruche Moodley is making his mark — not just as a young talent with a fierce competitive streak, but as a thoughtful, grounded athlete driven by more than just podiums and points.
We got the chance to sit with the athlete and discuss his rise to the Moto3 tracks of the world and how he has worked towards getting there with poise and great sportsmanship.
At only 18, the Gqeberha-born racer is ticking off one milestone after the next in his rookie Moto3 season, most recently taking on the challenges of the Lusail International Circuit in Qatar. A first-time night race and extreme heat tested both machine and mindset — and Ruche rose to the occasion, finishing 13th and earning more points toward the championship. His performance turned heads, not just for the result, but for the way he handled the pressure, proving his racecraft is maturing with every lap.
But for Ruche, the journey isn’t just about numbers on a board. It’s about growth.
“My goal is to improve the way I ride this bike and gain as much experience as possible,” he says. “It is a long season, so I’m motivated. If we keep making solid steps and learning from every situation, we will achieve our goals.”
It’s this level-headedness that makes his approach so refreshing. Whether it’s wheelies off the line or tyre strategy on the fly, he’s focused on the bigger picture: becoming the best rider he can be.
Racing Runs in the Family
Racing is in Ruche’s blood. His father’s career laid the foundation, both technically and emotionally.
“I’ve learnt a lot from my dad because he has a lot of experience in racing,” Ruche explains. “There are many situations and challenges that he had to deal with too, so when he sees me struggling, he gives me advice and tells me how he dealt with it.”
It’s clear that his father’s insight has become a secret weapon — a kind of real-time mentorship that’s helped him stay grounded through the inevitable ups and downs of elite sport.
Dad even joined Ruche for his inaugural race, keeping him shaded in the heat of the Thai sun.

The Grit Behind the Glory
Though his recent performance in Qatar proved he can punch above his weight, it hasn’t always been smooth riding.
“I’ve had to overcome many challenges, broken bones and hard times,” he admits. “The way to overcome all those different types of challenges is the same which is to keep the vision of achieving my goal and working hard every day with the belief that I will achieve it.”
There’s a quiet determination in the way Ruche speaks — no dramatics, just dedication. Whether he’s grappling with mental fatigue from long travel schedules or shaking off a setback on the track, he’s built a toolkit that keeps him sharp. Meditation, mindfulness, and maintaining focus on what truly matters keep him in the zone.
“I try to be mindful so that I stay mentally fresh and focused. Doing meditation helps me stay calm and in the present moment.”
Wisdom in the Fast Lane

For young riders watching his journey unfold and dreaming of their own place on the international stage, Ruche has a message:
“Give it your 100% every day — every training session and every race. You have to be totally committed and know that you’ll have to make sacrifices along the way. Only when you are prepared to do that, will you succeed.”
And what would this rising star say to his younger self? The answer is simple, yet profound:
“Enjoy every moment. You still have so much to learn.”
It’s clear that Ruche Moodley is not just racing for glory — he’s racing with purpose. And while the season is still young, his calm focus, grounded wisdom, and relentless hunger for progress suggest that this is just the beginning of a long, thrilling journey.
Good luck, Ruche — we’ll be watching every lap.
