Epilepsy may be a part of her life, but it will never be the whole story. For the second time, Sharlene Cassel is lacing up for Ride Joburg, proving that courage is always stronger than diagnosis.
Johannesburg, South Africa (24 October 2025) – The National Director of Epilepsy South Africa, Sharlene Cassel, is on a journey of hope and resilience. This Sunday, she will once again take on the Ride Joburg 2025 challenge for the second year running.
This year, she will be joined by over 30 other teammates in what should prove to be an inspiring ride!
Understanding the seizure-related symptoms and potential complications of epilepsy as a person living with it herself, participating in this cycling event, isn’t just another race; it’s a triumph over the many seizures she’s faced in recent years.
Each pedal stroke is a personal showcase of resilience, courage, and a refusal to let epilepsy define her.
“Sharlene’s ride is a beacon of hope for everyone facing epilepsy, showing that with determination, we can overcome incredible obstacles. Her goal is to inspire others with epilepsy to dream, to conquer their fears, and to believe they are capable of extraordinary things,” Epilepsy South Africa shares.
The self-confessed “Epilepsy Warrior in The Business of Brain Health” is currently raising essential funds through BackaBuddy, where all proceeds will go towards Epilepsy South Africa, ensuring that no one has to face epilepsy alone.
Epilepsy South Africa serves as the sole national non-profit organisation in the country dedicated to providing specialised and comprehensive services to individuals with epilepsy.
“This campaign is about breaking the stigma, encouraging understanding, and celebrating the bravery of millions across South Africa living with epilepsy. Every contribution, no matter the size, brings us closer to a world where epilepsy is met with compassion and support.”
