A weekend of nostalgia as South Africa’s cricket legends lift the World Championship of Legends trophy in England
Birmingham, England (04 August 2025) – Just weeks after the Proteas won the ICC World Test Championship, there come the legends. The ones who came before them also earned a World Champion title. Imagine all your favourite cricket legends back on the same field, playing the game they love, and giving fans a taste of their glory days. Well, that is exactly what happened this weekend as South Africa’s Champions team lit up Edgbaston grounds in England, defeating Pakistan to claim the World Championship of Legends title.
Not to mention the prize money! Walking away with $200 000 (around R3.6 million) made this even sweeter. With a group of players who already travelled the world with memories and trophies, this one comes with well-deserved bragging rights. It was a moment that felt more like a celebration of South African cricket than just another match. The team, made up of some of the country’s most iconic former players, reminded the world that their talent and passion for the game have not faded.
The final against Pakistan was the perfect stage. South Africa rose to the occasion, showing off the same skill and flair that made them household names. Chasing that 196 looked easy. It was that opening partnership between Hashim Amla and AB de Villiers that gave them the perfect start. Their confidence and experience shone through, and when the winning runs were hit, it was not just a victory on the scoreboard; it was a nostalgic triumph for fans back home.
This title is a significant achievement for South Africa. It is not every day that a team of legends comes together and lifts an international trophy, and doing it against a team as strong as Pakistan makes it even sweeter. Beyond the silverware and prize money, the moment was about pride, for the players, the supporters, and the country.
For many South Africans, seeing these familiar faces celebrate together again brought back memories of some of the nation’s greatest cricket moments. The World Championship of Legends gave fans a chance to see the heroes of yesterday, proving that while their professional careers may have ended, their love for the game certainly hasn’t.
